2001-Juli-20 - 1:27 p.m. Yesterday I was watching a guy teach his daughter to ride a bike. It was the cutest thing. She had this tiny little bike and she was wearing a helmet. And he did that thing that everyone teaching a kid to ride a bike does, he held onto the back and then would let go and then run beside her to catch her if she fell. He did a good job. I remember learning to ride a bike. I'm sure that for most people that's a standard memory. My grandpa taught me. I don't completely remember, but I think that I didn't actually have a bike at home yet, and he had a bunch because he would get old ones from people and fix them up for all the grandchildren to use when they visited. So, I remember that feeling of realizing that they're no longer holding you up. I think it is one of the first experiences that you have as a person where you realize that you can really do something if you try. Of course, the first thing you do when you realize for the first time that you're on your own, is fall. But if you're lucky, you have someone there to pick you up and tell you to try again.
